PROJECT SUMMARY

The Newcastle Cogeneration (NewCogen) power plant utilizes methane-rich gas to generate electric power by means of a combination of gas turbines and reciprocating engines. The power generated by the power plant is evacuated to the National Electrical Grid via the KarboChem (Pty) Ltd. 132kV substation.

ADM provided the Electrical Balance of Plant Engineering, Procurement and Construction services for the expansion of the power plant. The power plant was expanded by adding two x2MW gas reciprocating engine Jenbacher generator sets to the plant.

The works included the retrofitting of two spare 11kV metal-clad switchgear tiers to function as generator breakers. The switchgear tiers were fitted with new Intelligent Electronic Devices with the latest protection functions. ADM also retrofitted the existing generator medium voltage termination boxes to include the required voltage transformers and surge protection equipment and supplied and installed all medium voltage cabling.
