PROJECT SUMMARY

Jeffreys Bay wind farm is located between Jeffreys Bay and Humansdorp in the Eastern Cape, and is connected to the Eskom national grid via a 132kV substation.

RWW Engineering has been contracted to install an active filter at the wind farm, connected to the wind farm’s 33kV power evacuation system. To this effect, RWW Engineering requested ADM to perform an impact study with regards to the existing Medium Voltage (MV) protection system and to design a protection scheme for the active filter.

To achieve this, ADM is performing the following:

  • Update the existing Jeffrey Bay wind farm single line diagram, and protection and metering diagram;
  • Assess the impact of installing the active filter on the existing protection grading and settings;
  • Design a protection and control scheme for the newly-installed active filter;
  • Update the existing protection philosophy;
  • Calculate new protection settings for the active filter;
  • Implement the new protection settings on the protection relay;
  • Perform Factory Acceptance Testing (FAT) of the new active filter MV equipment and protection scheme;
  • Perform Site Acceptance Testing (SAT) of the active filter protection scheme.
